The request for these videos was to keep it simple and short, yet effective. Professional in look but not a hollywood movie. These videos were placed next to the products on the company’s website.

Special Events and Music

Editing music? A band, shot at a party or other special event? Not much b-roll to choose from?
Be as creative as it gets! Filters, colors, solids, composites, reverse, flop… With this type of stuff you can literally create a music video with nothing but shots of the band — provided the camera person grabbed not just a wide angle.
The trick: re-use the same shots as cutaways where appropriate. Make it look as if it was shot with several cameras. Mask weird camera moves. Distort them with filters if possible and make it a theme. If you’re consistent, your audience will forgive you. If your editing style matches the genre of the music, your audience will love it. If you have other elements of the event such as guests, host etc, even better. Throw it all in. Keep it in the same style as the rest of the video. The music will carry it.
Stylize the video and make it work as a standalone musical piece. If that works, you can still integrate it into the remaining part of the event. Imagine a video of a birthday party, guests chatting, drinking, socializing. Then the band starts playing and this cool music video flickers across the screen.
Entertaining enough? Sure ’nuff!!

Revisions, revisions, revisions

Tearing it down is never easy.
Sometimes it takes a fellow video professional, or a friend to tell you “cut it all out!”
You’re hesitant. You give it a shot. It worked…
Less information lures the viewer into wanting to learn more and thus explore the website for the corporation which the video advertises.
Short web-videos are more powerful. Long web-videos often lose their audience. If you have to watch a video twice to get it, it ain’t workin’.
How much info is TMI???
Is there an actual formula?

Fast Edits and Corporate Looks

Web Videos

Editing a corporate video for web, I find using a cool color palette and fast edits switching to different camera set-ups very useful. Especially if footage is limited to event footage (of speaker) shot with one or two cameras with no access to images or graphics. Quick dip to color (white) dissolves as transitions where needed help the eye deal with the jump cuts. Sprinkle with titles to taste and serve over fast paced ambient music track.
